About this book:

The first in depth portrait of one of the world's best known luxury brands, this elegant volume traces the remarkable history of the House of Vuitton, which has been making practical but stylish luggage, handbags and accessories for more than 150 years. Written with full access to the company's archives, the book itself demonstrates Louis Vuitton's passion for fine design with a stunning array of archival art, historical images, product designs and sketches, and cutting edge advertising. The book explores the company's tradition of quality and innovation in the context of sweeping changes in society, art, culture, fashion and, above all, travel. Examining the life and times of the company's first three leaders; founder Louis (who invented the modern trunk), his son Georges and his grandson Gaston, the text focuses on the firm's development under their guidance. It also discusses Vuitton's explosive growth toward the end of the 20th century, including the 1987 merger with Moet Hennessy that made it part of LVMH, the world's largest luxury goods company and spurred the expansion of its boutiques to more than 300 locations in 50 countries around the globe.

When this book was published in 2004, it was the first to describe and explain, with numerous previously unseen documents and accounts, the fascinating and irrepressible rise of the world's finest luxury company, which was celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2004. This new edition will include a complete update of the final section of the book, which discusses the company's recent history, with new texts, photos, and interviews.

The company is examined through the lives of its first three leaders—founder Louis (who invented the modern trunk), his son Georges, and his grandson Gaston.

Now with fresh information on subjects such as designs for ready-to-wear clothing, shoes, jewelry, and even automobiles, this new edition includes 20 additional pages and updated material throughout the book, covering the brand’s recent history, with new texts and photographs.

Reviews on the web:

If you are a Louis Vuitton collector as I am, or LV enthusiast, this tome will be a magnificent addition to your collection, or to your library. It is full of remarkable LV family history and full of the most beautiful photographs, some suitable for framing. It contains manyo of the LV Posters for example, that I've tried to collect, and now have them in this book. It could make a wonderful coffee table book this holiday season. One drawback: The center page is wonderful but terribly flawed by the center binding. It should have been a pull-out page instead. I also saw it on eBay for more dollars and listed as "rare". Hardly! Enjoy it. (read more)

This book gave me insight for a book report that I needed a lot of resources for. This book gave me in-depth information that was so very helpful. It helped me enormously. It could have been a little smaller, but where else are you suppossed to put all that great information? I recommend it to anyone who is in dire need to learn about Louis Vuitton (who, by the way, is my hero!) (read more)

This is a must have for all LV officianados. I have been collecting and using LV for over twenty-one years. This is an excellent literary and pictorial compilation of La Maison de Vuitton. Cudos! to the author, publisher, and of course La Maison de Vuitton for their continued commitment to perfection, elegance, and extrordinary products. Cudos, to the artisians for their pain-staking perfectionism in creating such works of art. This book is a tribute to over 150 years of leathercrafting, and now within the past 5 years pret-de-porte, couture, and precious metals. Vuitton continues to allow those of us loyal to the House to continue pushing the boundaries of style and fashion, and subtly encouraging admirer's of the House to indulge. Life is a journey, so why not travel with the best. Well done LV! Tres magnifique! (read more)

Here's a fluff-puff coffee table book of passing interest to Vuitton fanatics; nothing about it makes for a wider audience. Yet I bet even the most devoted collector will only glance through it a couple times and put it aside. (And no, the book -- at least my version -- does NOT have an actual Vuitton handle bolted to the cover.) (read more)

This book is filled with the history of the company from the person, Louis Vuitton's childhood, up through the generations that came after him. There are pictures of LV pieces scattered throughout the book. Not enough for those of us who love to look at LV bags and luggage. Overall a great addition to a collectors collection. The book retails in the boutique for $135. (read more)

Well, well, well, it took three tries be we finally got it right with the help of Mindy T at Amazons Customer Service Center. I’m talking about “Louis Vuitton: The Birth of Modern Luxury {Updated Edition} this 560 page almost 9 pound baby is a must for people who love Coffee Table Books,{it should be 4 1/2 stars I'm taking off a 1/2 star because I had to return it twice because it was damaged} so let’s talk about the problems first or second, first off I love books, especially Coffee Table Books they have a nice blend of a great story and pictures, as a photographer this is like the best of both worlds so when you mix photos and art on high quality paper I can spend the day wrapped up in these kind of books and my mind becomes like a sponge and is dripping with so much information I’m in pass out mode for the rest of the day. Now with that being said most of us 98 per-centers don’t have money to just throw around by spending hundreds of dollars on a book SO when we do we want our purchase to be flawless {no ripped or creased pages, the cover to be pristine, no stains or marks} so last week I treated myself to 6 Coffee Table Books (CTB from this point on) as a belated holiday gift and was VERY Happy with the first 4 and then I had two with major dents and bends, I was bummed but knew that I would have to send these back @ $50 and $90 I wasn’t going to overlook this (like spending $50,000.00 for a car with a big dent on the driver side door) The Chanel book was three books in a sleeve and the sleeve was jacked around the corners like it had been dropped and the Louis Vuitton look like it had also been dropped and the cover had all these little holes on the top. This book has it all: a history lesson, an understanding and the very essence of Louis Vuitton style. The author clearly lives and understands LV. This book is a guide to understanding LV the family and the brand. This book is riveting and mind opening. LV is not just an expense bag or luggage. It is an adventure and is for the adventurous. I love this book. (read more)

This book must weigh at least 20 lbs! Great illustrations. Not much to do with purses, but a lot to do with history. The old Louis Vuitton state rooms on the ships was the thing that impressed me the most. Really well put together book! (read more)

As a collector of Louis Vuitton since 1989, I appreciate and enjoy this "history book", very much. Do not buy it if you are wanting alot of photos and fluff of the current lines. This book is truly for those that enjoy a love affair with the company and products from a historical and quality standpoint. (read more)
